it’s my lucky day!

A day off (well, a fake day off. I’m grading. Then eating pho and writing this post. Then more grading). And then I’m enjoying a long weekend with my favorite guy.

But perhaps most importantly…

I just discovered that She & Him made a HOLIDAY ALBUM. AND I’M LISTENING TO IT RIGHT NOW!

Too early, you say? Hardly such a thing when it comes to holiday music or decorating or baking.

You may recall that I am the proud owner of a Pottery Barn Kids’ collection of holiday favorites. Perhaps this new purchase is slightly less embarrassing?

What’s your favorite holiday music? Is it too soon? Is it?

lullaby.

One of my favorite forms of music is the lullaby. My music collection rivals my book collection, but I don’t often talk about lullabies because they’re rarely, if ever, relevant to contemporary music culture, so I was pleasantly surprised to hear one on this album.

Lullabies can be found in every culture, and there’s evidence that they were sung in Ancient Greece. I love that they have a clear purpose– to help a child or loved one fall asleep– and that their nature is inherently soothing, even when the lyrics are a little sad. If I weren’t so tired, I’d love to discuss the history of lullabies here because it’s fascinating.

Here are the lyrics from my new favorite lullaby for you, adults, and the song follows. I think it’s just gorgeous. It reminds me of a choral song I love. xo, m

If You Can’t Sleep

by She & Him (Zooey Deschanel & M. Ward)

If you can’t sleep, I’ll be there in your dreams
I’ll be there in your dreams, if you can’t sleep at all
And in your dreams, I’ll touch your cheek
And lay my head on your shoulder

Goodbye, shadows

You’re far away if you can’t see my face
If the world is cold, but the sun shines the same
Shut your eyes
There are bluer skies
For your embrace to my heart

Goodbye, shadows

If you can’t sleep, I’ll be there in your dreams
I’ll be there in your dreams, if you can’t sleep at all
And in your dreams, I’ll touch your cheek
And lay my head on your shoulder

sun dresses.

Hello, all! I’m back! Kind of. How are you?

I’ve been busy with graduate school, tutoring, field work, + homework. A project is due today, so I’m breathing a sigh of relief now that it’s (mostly) complete. I’ve also cleaned out my closet and pantry to avoid doing said homework, so that’s kept me extra busy. It’s amazing the unpleasant things we’ll do to avoid starting a project, right?

But now I’m finished, and I’m here, and I’ve got a few favorites from Steven Alan’s spring line for you. They’re all above my price range, but it’s still fun to look at pretty clothes. They’re so flowy + floral — just what I love in a summer dress. Happy weekend! xo, m

Mina Stone Printed Silk Pocket Dress

No.6 Safari Dress

No.6 Cowl Neck Dress

P.S. I’d love to wear one of these dresses + listen to this song. It’s beginning to feel a lot like summer. [Also, the dance moves in this are almost painfully cute. I love this video.]

cute.

This is almost too cute. And yet, I love it… Happy weekend, ya’ll. (Is it okay to say “ya’ll” if I’m not from the South? Well, I’ve gone and done it.) xo, m
PS- Maybe I like this because I want to do this silly dance with a boy, especially if he lets me pretend to play piano keys on his nose.
PPS- The cuteness begins at 1:10.
