Please Please Me isn’t as lyrically or musically innovative as The Beatles’ later albums, but can you really get any better than “Twist and Shout”? That was my favorite song when I was a little girl. I remember my dad playing it in the car or when he was “cooking” (also known as burning things on the barbeque) and how I’d wiggle & dance with excitement.

The album has other gems, such as Ringo awkwardly singing, “My girl says when I kiss her lips / Gets a thrill through her finger tips” in “Boys” (originally a Shirelles song, so there’s a lot of “bop shuop, m’bop bop shuop”s) and then shouting, “Alright, George!” I have a soft spot in my heart for announced guitar solos and interludes.

I bought Please Please Me today. I’d lost my copy, and I missed it. If you need a little pick-me-up or an indulgence in nostalgia, listen to “Twist and Shout” below. Ferris Buehler & a catchy song? Yesss. xo, m
