Photographer Philippe Halsman said,
“WHEN YOU ASK A PERSON TO JUMP, HIS ATTENTION IS MOSTLY DIRECTED TOWARD THE ACT OF JUMPING, AND THE MASK FALLS, SO THAT THE REAL PERSON APPEARS.”
In his exhibition “JUMP,” Halsman photographed celebrities, politicians, writers, and artists jumping before his camera. He called this series of photographs “jumpology.” I love the spontaneity and playfulness the subjects’ expressions and movements. (Side note: I’m going to use the non-word “jumpology” as much as I darn well please. And I’m writing about a guy from the ’50s so I think it’s okay to write “darn well.”) Halsman, famous for his LIFE magazine covers, emigrated from Latvia to NYC in the ’40s and quickly became one of the most prominent photographers in the 1950s. This collection of photographs is one of his most famous.
